Bluehone’s name originates from a type of granite called blue hone. Quarried from the Ailsa Craig, a unique uninhabited island off the West Coast of Scotland, blue hone is most famous as the granite used to make curling stones. Known in Gaelic as the Fairy Rock ("Aillse Creag"), this spectacular chunk of pure granite is one of Scotland's most famous landmarks, lying in the Firth of Clyde channel between Ireland and Scotland. Ailsa Craig is mentioned in a number of Celtic texts, as well as influencing Keats, Wordsworth and Burns.
